Rabbit Care

Rabbits are affectionate, intelligent companions, but they have very specific needs to stay healthy and thrive. At Urban Exotics, we provide dedicated rabbit care focused on their unique medical and husbandry requirements, while supporting owners with clear, practical guidance to help their rabbit live a long, comfortable life.

If you are looking for a rabbit vet in Sydney, we offer care designed specifically around rabbits and their needs.

What we offer

Health Checks

During the visit, we assess your pet’s overall health and lifestyle. First-time clients complete a short questionnaire about home environment and diet. We’ll review nutrition, perform a full physical exam, check weight, run a faecal test for parasites and infections, and talk through any behavioural changes or concerns you may have.

Filavac Vaccination

Rabbits are at risk of a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease called rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHDV), caused by a calicivirus. There are two main strains currently affecting pet rabbits in Australia, RHDV1 and RHDV2. We recommend vaccinating against both strains to provide the best possible protection for your rabbit.

Diagnostics

We offer a wide range of in-house diagnostic tests to help us quickly understand what’s going on with your pet. This includes blood testing, cytology, faecal test, biopsies, x-rays, and ultrasound. Our in-house machines allow us to run many blood tests using a very small sample, with results available in as little as 20 minutes.

Desexing

Desexing your rabbit helps improve their quality of life. Spaying females is particularly important for preventing reproductive disease, such as uterine and mammary cancer, while castrating male rabbits helps reduce spraying, aggression, and territorial behaviour, supports successful bonding, and removes the risk of testicular cancer.

Hospitalization

We offer hospitalisation for rabbits in purpose-designed enclosures that help regulate temperature and reduce stress. During their stay, we closely monitor appetite, gut motility, pain, and hydration, with supportive care including assisted feeding, fluids, and tailored pain relief.

Geriatric Care

We also provide compassionate geriatric and palliative care for rabbits with chronic or life-limiting conditions. Our focus is on comfort, pain control, mobility, appetite support, and quality of life, while helping you make thoughtful decisions along the way so your rabbit feels safe, supported, and cared for at every stage.

Dentistry

Dental disease is very common in rabbits and can significantly affect their comfort and overall health.

We commonly see incisor malocclusion, where the front teeth don’t align and overgrow, as well as back tooth disease that can lead to pain, drooling, reduced appetite, and gut issues. Regular checks and early treatment make a big difference.

Medical Illness

We help manage a wide range of illnesses in rabbits, especially those affecting gut motility, as well as dental disease, reproductive problems, ear infections, and systemic conditions involving the liver and kidneys. Our focus is early detection and working closely with you to keep your rabbit healthy and comfortable.
